We have been coming to Hockmans for three years now! My son has grown so much in his self-confidence, flexibility and strength. When we started we were looking for an extra curricular he would enjoy, and help him improve his confidence. We had tried several sports, and found those were not a good fit. Karate/taekwondo was suggested to us and decided to try Hockmans Martial Arts. We are so thankful we did! We had no idea we would still be doing it, three years later! My son has been determined to receive his black belt since the beginning and we are getting very close!

It is with great apprehension that I am writing this review – I will explain why at the end.My first encounter with the Hockman Martial Arts facility located on Rangeline Road (their North Location) was right before I turned 71 years old, about a year and a half ago.I had been invited to watch a young man who was “testing” for his 2nd Degree Black Belt. This seventh-grader was not only very talented, but actually appeared to be having fun doing what can only be assumed to be a demanding sport requiring the knowledge of forms, an assortment of weapons, and the expertise and grace to make the sport beautiful to watch. I do not possess any of those particular traits – but I was still fascinated. Not only did I stay to watch the entire testing process that night, I also went back two days later to watch two groups of younger children (Tigers and Basic) testing for their new belts. It was intriguing to see how focused many of the kids were and how involved everyone was in their achievements. I also attended a tournament that was in St. Louis, fascinated by the engagement and focus of all ages of competitors.I can’t imagine their surprise when I returned with my free pass and said I wanted to find out about the school and classes. During our discussion I learned that Taekwondo is open to everyone, regardless of their individual ability or inability (in my case – I can’t jump). I thought, “Why not; I hate gyms and I need to do something for exercise that helps me with flexibility, bone health and provide cognitive stimulation—all while having some fun.” This looked like a great opportunity!I absolutely love it! Where else can an “old chunky chicken” (yes, I’m overweight – but working on it) find such a nurturing environment to test what she can and can’t do and have a group of enthusiastic people who consistently encourages and motivates? Did I mention that I have never had so much fun in all my life and have rarely missed a class? Am I improving ? Of course I am! Am I getting stronger? Yep! Do I still love the atmosphere and comradeship that makes up the ATA Taekwondo world? Absolutely! My goal is to have my black belt several months before I turn 75 and I’m half way to earning it. I have no doubt I will succeed in this goal, as I have an awesome support system in place, led by Master Hockman, Mr. Edwards and several other instructors at our school—along with Miss Kelly at the front desk (with dual roles of Admin. and instructor).Martial arts requires the willingness to learn from people both younger and older than you may be (Ok, to be honest, I think I’m their oldest student) and the willingness to learn, be corrected and keep on trying. If you want to test yourself, your body and your willingness to learn new things then don’t hesitate to give Taekwondo a try by stopping by or give them a call to discuss your options. Regardless of your abilities, it’s your attitude that will make a difference. Come meet and work out with a great group of people and on top of that you get to earn belts! The reason that I am apprehensive about writing this review is that right now our adult class is still quite small. I view my time there as an enjoyable experience—one I’m not sure how keen I am on sharing this environment with large numbers of new students. But I’m willing to share this wonderful experience with anyone who is motivated and needs to make a difference in his/her life. This is a fantastic place to be.KarenStudent – Hockman’s Martial Arts

My son LOVES Taekwondo and ALL his instructors. Its a 45 min class and Chase is learning a TON of skills so that he can KEEP moving and NOT get caught when sparring (which is 1 of his FAVORITE portions of class.)They have multiple age ranges, multiple belt levels, and it teaches discipline to the students. Once a quarter they learn a technique like "How to get out of a headlock." The class works with different gear as well.As a parent I love that the instructors are willing to split classes up so that NO ONE gets bored. New students are taught in 1 section while there could be 1 or 2 different groups that work on different portions of the form or to work with their weapons. When the class is hitting or kicking boards the students are divided up based on their level, belt, and the instructors try to put students that are the same size range together.

We have really enjoyed having our daughter go here. I was hesitant at first to get started because my kiddo is super shy and wouldn’t do anything without me right next to her. However at the initial visit for the Tigers class, Ms. Kelly was able to get her out on the mat and doing some moves without me right next to her.We continued with the trial phase and before it was up my kiddo asked if we would keep going back and I asked her if she wanted to and she told me yes because right now it was scary but she wanted to keep doing it so it wasn’t scary anymore. We have been doing it for a few months now and I am blown away by how much confidence that she has gained in that time. She went from not talking and being scared to answering up in class and believing in herself.Ms. Kelly is an amazing teacher/leader. I love the balance of encouraging/excitement but also gentle sternness when needed. My daughter constantly wants to work with Ms. Kelly. With that said all the people that help out in the classes are great. We really appreciate everyone and the work they have done with her. Highly recommend!

My daughter is in a class at Hockmans. She is a very outgoing child but lacked full confidence in herself. She has almost been there a month and her confidence is so much better. She has 3 stripes in three weeks. The instructors are amazing with the kids and always there to help. They are even amazing with the parents if there are questions. As long she wants to keep going we will be in every class.

We've been going to Hockman's South for about 13 years for Krav Maga and Taekwondo. Both kiddos are now 2nd degree Black Belts. Master Hockman, Miss Henson and the other instructors are fabulous. Highly recommend for all ages!

We cannot say enough good things about Hockman's ATA. Our son began taekwondo here at the beginning of the year and it's been an amazing experience from the first day. He LOVES going to his classes and works hard outside of class too. When he began attending, he was very shy and quiet during classes, and while he's only about 6 months in, we have already seen so much growth with his confidence and determination! It's been so fun to watch! Master Hockman, Ms Henson and crew are all amazing and work so well with everyone who attends, no matter their skill level. We have even seen him using life lessons he learns in class at home, which is pretty cool to see. We have never been able to get our son to want to attend a summer camp and when information for their camp came out this year, we didn't have ro ask twice or even have to encourage him to attend. He was so excited! We love to see him so invested in something so great! We have been so impressed and are excited to see how much our son continues to grow. We are very thankful for this experience!!

I cannot recommend Hockman's strongly enough. My daughter has attended for the past three years and the growth and confidence she has developed has been phenomenal. The care that Master Hockman and Ms Henson clearly feel for their students shines through in their instruction. I really appreciate that they are tough but fair with the students - pushing kids to be the best that they can be while teaching respect and self-worth. My daughter has loved not only the classes but also parents' night out events and camp. Each experience has been positive and my daughter has both enjoyed herself and gained maturity. During the past three years, we have lost family members and had other problems arise and Master Hockman and Ms. Henson have been supportive and flexible when our family has needed it. I've always felt comfortable talking with them and have always received quick, courteous and thoughtful responses. My daughter is always excited to go to Hockman's and I am happy to support such a fantastic business.

My sons confidence has grown so much since he’s been training here. Even his school teachers have noticed. The instructors are great. You not only work together in a class setting but also in a one on one setting. The instructors do everything they can to help the students including adding videos they can study while not in class. The instructors not only teach karate, they teach the students how to respect them selves and others as well. My son and I are so happy he’s doing these classes. I would recommend Hockman’s martial arts to anybody and everybody! Thank you to each and every instructor involved for all you do it’s very much appreciated!
