The Art of Reclaiming Security

Posted on: February 18, 2015

kravMany might question the idea of National Self-defense month, but I would challenge those same people to shrug off the incredible statistic in this country when it comes to violence. It is a month of awareness to those who are not aware of what their fellow Americans are going through, as well as a moment of reflection for those that feel helpless. As we start the New Year, it is a moment to realize that it is estimated that 1 out of every 6 women, as well as 1 out of every 33 men will be the victim of sexual assault this year. It means that according to the numbers, you will encounter at the very least one individual within this year that will have been the victim of a brutal, despicable violent act and anyone with a conscience will tell you that is one too many.

How do martial arts help?

Self-defense techniques are only a small part of what martial arts are about. The comradery, confidence and discipline found throughout the martial arts community are instilled in each student; this in turn makes them every potential attacker’s nightmare. People who commit these types of crimes do so to victimize individuals. There is a reason why 44% of victims of sexual assault are under the age of 18 and even more shocking that 15% are under the age of 12. Cowards who carry out these types of crimes are looking for targets they can easily victimize.

Martial arts helps provide a frame of mind that may help many avoid the situation all together and enables them to be able to defend themselves should the occasion arise. Teaching children from a young age that they are in control of their destiny and that they have the ability to take control of their security is highly important. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for a parent or guardian to join their young daughter or son in this type of activity as well. Not only does the child feel encouraged by having a trusted adult take the time to participate in the activity with them, but it also encourages adults to engage in an activity that they will reap the benefits from for years to come.
